“The 10th anniversary of our debut, we want to be role models for our juniors.”
TVXQ have signaled the return of the kings with an amazing performance and sophisticated charisma.
TVXQ held their first rendition of ‘Something’, the title track of their 7th album, on KBS2’s ‘Music Bank’ on the 3rd of January. Their performance was amazing as usual, but was also new and refreshing because they swapped their bold charisma for a swing jazz feel. It was a welcomed transformation that reflected the 10 years of experience under their belt.
Meeting with TVXQ in their ‘Music Bank’ waiting room, we asked them how they felt about their comeback.
U-Know Yunho said, “I couldn’t sleep well last night ahead of our comeback. The feeling that we have to do well since this is our first performance since our 10th anniversary kept me up.” Max Changmin added, “I’m excited but nervous to be standing on stage again for the first time in a while. Everyone, including our dance team, has a lot of affection for his song. There are high expectations for our comeback, but I’m just happy that we’ll be able to enjoy ourselves on stage.”
TVXQ have temporarily set aside their charismatic and powerful performances for a light and fun atmosphere to complete their swing jazz stage.
TVXQ stated, “We read some comments after the release of our music video, and for the first time, they were mostly positive. We think it’s because we focused more on public appeal, rather than looking cool.”
They also added, “We’ve been a little uptight and strong for the last 10 years, and this time around, we’re going to be more relaxed about it. We’re excited but worried at the same time. TVXQ’s unique color is quite strong to begin with, so we’ve toned it down a little to attract public appeal, but we’re curious and worried about how people will take it.”
On the reason why they’ve taken on such a transformation, TVXQ explained, “It was mostly because it was our 10th anniversary recently. We perform with a live band in most of our overseas concerts. We began to think ‘We have to be able to express ourselves in a way that appeals of the public more.’ We thought it would be great to take something old-school and modernize it. Doing something new over repeating something old, but in a way that is approachable. We focused on having a big band theme.”
They continued to add, “We found that there’s a controversy over whether Yoo Young Jin really wrote this song, with people saying things like ‘Yoo Young Jin is capable to writing such an approachable song?’ We received a lot of compliments that we’ve lost a lot of the tension in our shoulders, but in a good way. We’re grateful for all the positive comments we’ve been receiving. Of course, we won’t know for sure until we’ve opened the lid completely, but we think we’re on the right path right now.”
TVXQ expressed that their goals for this round of promotional activities is to become a role model for their juniors.
TVXQ said, “We stepped foot in a music show’s waiting room for the first time in a while, and received greetings from our juniors like VIXX. It took us back to the old days when we were rookies,” and “We’re proud of the fact that we’ve been in this industry for more than 10 years now.”
They also stated, “We hate hearing that, ‘The lifespan of an artiste is short’. We’re happy to hear that Psy and Seotaeji are making a comeback as well. It’s great to see artistes who were around 10 years ago, when we were rookies, still performing. We have so much to learn from them. Instead of a goal of ‘Let’s make this a hit’, we’d rather focus on showing our juniors that ‘Seniors like TVXQ still exist’.”
Meanwhile, TVXQ will also be appearing on MBC’s ‘Show! Music Core’ on the 4th and SBS’ ‘Inkigayo’ on the 5th.
