A live screening in 38 movie theaters across Japan

“I became a fan of TVXQ 3~4 years ago and have been attending their concerts since then. My mother is a fan as well, so I came to tonight’s concert with her. I really like Yunho and Changmin because they are so charming.” (Fumiya Gato, 23)

“I’ve been a fan of TVXQ for a long time. When I listen to their songs, I feel better, like I’m being filled with energy and life. Our family of four, including my daughter, are here for tonight’s concert. I like U-Know Yunho just a little more than Max Changmin, and it’s because he’s so ‘hardworking’, a trait that people in my generation favor in people.” (Eiko Gamiyauchi, 66)

TVXQ will be rewriting the history of K-pop on the 17th and 18th at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Japan. They are the first to hold a concert at the Nissan Stadium, which seats approximately 72,000 people, and have sold all 144,000 seats for both days. Only a select few have performed at this venue, including top stars such as X-JAPAN, SMAP and EXILE.

TVXQ became the first Korean singers to hold a Five Dome tour in Japan in April and their upcoming concerts will bring the total number of audience members of this year’s tour to 850,000. With each ticket costing an average of 9,800 Yen, the total amount of money earned from ticket sales alone is approximately 95 billion Won.

The stadium concert, which is the finale of TVXQ’s Japanese tour, will be screened live at 38 movie theaters across Japan, including Osaka and Hokkaido. With the group gaining new male fans in their twenties, attending a TVXQ concert has become part of the younger generation’s dating culture.

On the 17th, TVXQ captivated their fans with songs from their albums such as ‘Android’ and ‘Superstar’, as well as solo performances of ‘T Style’ (Yunho) and ‘Rock With You’ (Changmin). The encore performance alone was an hour-long feat with the group performing songs such as ‘WHY’ and ‘Somebody to Love’. The Japanese audience accepted TVXQ as one of their own and became one with the members. With a sturdy foundation created through a glocalization strategy, the members sang in Japanese and had their fans laughing as they joked around in the language as well.

The visuals of their concert were the highlight of the performance. The sight of 70,000 fans in one space along was a sight to see. TVXQ appeared on the large stage in elevators and rode a monorail around the stage as they performed dance tracks. The screens on stage showed videos of the two members free-falling or being chased, adding adrenaline and excitement for the fans.

The audience members’ fanlights took the atmosphere up a notch. The company in charge of the concert distributing red fanlights and electric cheering watches to the fans, and central control system changed the color of the fanlights to red, blue and green. When firecrackers and fireworks were set off, the atmosphere was hotter than ever. After the concert ended, Max Changmin said, “I’m so proud and excited about the fact that we just held a concert with the biggest audience in the world in one space,” and “We hope that this becomes the foundation for spreading the word about K-pop to the world.” He then added, “It’s a shame that I wasn’t able to meet the eyes of all our fans in the audience because it was such a big concert venue.”

U-Know Yunho stated, “The stadium is about 1.5 times bigger than the Dome (seating capacity of 50,000), so I was worried about the physical task that lay ahead of us, but we were able to end the concert on a high thanks to our fans,” and “We’ll be celebrating our 10th anniversary this year, and I feel so thrilled about the fact that we’ve worked our way up from small performances to the biggest concert venue ever.” The two members added, “We’ve been preparing a special event at the end of the year to commemorate our 10th anniversary,” and “We’re currently discussing plans for events like an album and a concert.”
