[T/N: This is part 4 of the journalist’s trip to Sapporo, Japan. Only #4 has been included as it pertains to TVXQ.]
Sapporo is a big city located in Hokkaido with a population of 1.9 million people. As the snow and beer mecca of Japan, it is well-known as a popular tourist hot spot. One of the greatest specialties of Sapporo is Sapporo Dome. We went to discover the charms of Sapporo Dome, which can hold both baseball and soccer matches.
The place to determine a singer’s success
Sapporo Dome was created for social physical education purposes. It is famous for being a place that many stars have passed through. From popular singers to sports stars, the list is extravagant. Sapporo Dome is also known to be the place to determine the success of any singer’s large-scale tour in Japan.
Although the population of the city is less than 2 million, the stadium can fit up to 40,000 people. Our Sapporo Dome tour guide emphasized the importance of the venue as he said, “When a singer holds a Dome tour in Japan, the success of their performance at Sapporo Dome determines the success of the entire tour.”
The reason is simple. The number of people who enjoy concerts in the city is estimated to be one-tenth of the entire population, around 200,000 people. Because traveling to Sapporo from other regions isn’t easy, the main target of Sapporo is the city’s population. Being able to attract 40,000 people to a performance means being able to bring in one-fifth of the available population.
Only a handful of singers have been able to fill Sapporo Dome, which includes idol group AKB48, rock group L’arc en Ciel, Exile and Arashi. TVXQ are the only Korean singers who have accomplished the feat, which they achieved in May. Their Sapporo Dome performance was part of their Dome Tour that attracted over 700,000 people.
Our Dome tour guide talked of the characteristics of Sapporo Dome as he said, “This is why people say that a singer can succeed anywhere else if they succeed at Sapporo Dome. The popular Korean group TVXQ are singers who have succeeded.”
